When Is the Best Time to Schedule a Newborn Session?

A simple guide for expecting parents on when to schedule a newborn session, when to photograph, and why timing matters for newborn portraits.

One of the questions I hear most often from expecting parents is:

“When should I schedule my newborn photos?”

It’s a great question because newborn photography is a little different than most portrait sessions. Unlike family photos or maternity sessions, newborn portraits are centered around a very short window of time.

The good news? Planning ahead makes the entire process easy and stress-free.

Here’s what every parent should know about scheduling their newborn session.

The Best Time to Book Is During Pregnancy

The biggest mistake many parents make is waiting until after their baby arrives to start looking for a photographer.

Most newborn photographers book sessions months in advance, especially during busy seasons.

I always recommend to schedule your newborn session sometime during your second trimester or early third trimester. At that point, we can secure a spot on my calendar based on your due date.

Don’t worry if your baby arrives early or late. Babies rarely follow schedules, and experienced newborn photographers expect that.

By booking before delivery, you’ll have one less thing to think about once your little one arrives.

The Best Time to Photograph Your Newborn

For traditional posed newborn photography, the ideal time is typically within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. During this stage, babies tend to sleep deeply, curl naturally into those sweet newborn poses, and are often more comfortable being gently positioned.

This is the stage most parents imagine when they see those sleepy newborn portraits featuring tiny fingers, curled-up poses, and peaceful expressions.

These early days pass incredibly quickly, which is why planning ahead is so important.

What If My Baby Is Already Older?

First, don’t panic.

Beautiful newborn portraits can still be created if your baby is older than two weeks.

Around three to six weeks old, babies are often more alert and expressive. While they may not sleep quite as deeply, parents often love capturing eye contact, curious expressions, and emerging personality.

Every stage has its own beauty.

The most important thing is documenting this season before it slips by.

Why Scheduling a Newborn Session Early Makes Life Easier

Life with a newborn is wonderful, but it’s also busy.

Very busy.

Between feedings, diaper changes, pediatrician appointments, and adjusting to a new routine, photography may be the last thing on your mind.

When your session is already booked, everything feels easier. You know your photographer, you’ve received preparation information ahead of time, and all you need to do is focus on enjoying your baby.

Don’t Forget Family Photos

One of the most meaningful parts of a newborn session isn’t just photographing your baby.

It’s photographing the connection between your growing family.

Parents, siblings, and even grandparents can help tell the complete story of this special chapter.

Years from now, your child won’t just want to see what they looked like as a newborn. They’ll want to see who was there loving them from the very beginning.

A Moment You’ll Never Get Back

The newborn stage is beautiful, emotional, exhausting, and incredibly fleeting.

Those tiny toes.

The sleepy stretches.

The way your baby fits perfectly in your arms.

Before you know it, those moments become memories.

Photographs allow you to hold onto them just a little longer.

If you’re expecting and thinking about newborn portraits, the best time to reserve your session is before your baby arrives. That way, when your little one finally makes their debut, everything is already in place.
